So you have a cool and rewarding job and new-found love and things are going swell — although with both, as one would expect, you may encounter the odd bumps and forks in the road that make you stop and blink for a while.
One of those moments of stop-and-blink often occurs when you check the state of your bank balance. Then you go “whoawaitaminute, where’d all that dosh go!?“
And that’s when you think “I need a second job for the weekends”. At least, that’s what I’m thinking, so, how does a world-weary, muddle-headed geek become the right misfit in the right place?
A couple thoughts.
Blog it
You should promote your availability first and foremost on your blog. Which *cough* I’m doing here. And you should specify what it is you’re capable of. Which in my case is almost nothing — which is more than most probloggers anyways.
Promote your pics
Use your Flickr pics more in blog posts, show them to friends, use them to illustrate emails… Have people know your snaps are available at a decent price and you’re ready and willing to go that extra mile and hide in celebrities’ dumpsters to get that singular killer shot. Don’t forget to change your copyright from CC to (c) though…
Quick Google
A quick google search always yields at least some results, but make sure you localize your query. However, job sites especially aimed at techies and geeks do exist (like Dice, Craigslist or Careerbuilder) — although Monster may help you out as well.
Job boards
Put jobs as a subdomain before a number of URLs and you may be pleasantly surprised. Jobs at RWW, for instance, or Gizmodo, suddenly become more realistic, and even if working for Lam or Block won’t happen (who needs 80 hour work weeks anyways?) then there’s always some other tech job available. Mind you, this doesn’t work with the CIA web site though.
Search
Obviously, you can search Google (or Yahoo or Live or any other), but try searching the social networking sites. Pownce, FriendFeed, Google forum and, last but not least at all, Twitter. Great thing about Twitter is that you can track it in real time through Summize search.twitter. Type in “job” and there’s your personal Appointments section for today. Who needs The Times?
Look, talk, listen
Perhaps your gran won’t know of any vacancies at the Apple store, but don’t hesitate mentioning you’re on the market to as many peeps as possible. And don’t be shy or embarrassed: we can all do with that extra buck or two. So can our SOs…
